Music at McClelland
Michelle Nicolle and Paul Grabowsky have long admired each other – Michelle grew up watching Paul on television, while he later recognized her as “one of the greatest jazz singers Australia has produced.” A few years ago, their conversations about music revealed a shared love of melancholy and heartfelt ballads, a connection deepened during the Covid lockdowns. The result is their ABC Jazz album Noir, a collection of standards and originals that find beauty and empathy in shadow, capturing sentiment without sentimentality. As Paul says, “we have found a happy place in these sad songs, in which each shadow reveals new light.”
